Favorite market in town

It’s Thursday and usually I try to do a quick shopping stop before work at my favorite supermarket. On that morning they do get a bread delivery by my favorite baker Morrell’s Bread. Their sesame loaf is so good (and this is coming from a German). The baker is also at the farmers market and opens up the bake shop once a week but this way I can get some of my fruit and veggie shopping done. I started shopping at Monterey market when the kids were little and my husband played soccer on Saturdays Close by. On a Saturday it’s a mad house (at least it used to be) so one has to be patient to get through the isles. Mornings during the week are much better.

Sometimes the selection makes it quite hard to decide on something.

And they have beautiful flowers, too.

I was very tempted to get one of the dried flower wreaths. Aren’t they pretty?

Most of the time it’s Monterey Market and Trader Joe’s or Grocery Outlet. I almost never set foot in our Safeway since I never can find anything I am looking for (and neither can the employees).

Do you have a favorite supermarket? Morning or evening shopping, week or weekend?

  1. We just go to a superstore on Monday nights. It’s usually not full of people then. We go there because it has a large selection of food for my husband who has dietary restrictions, but neither of us LOVE it. There’s a BEAUTIFUL store across the street, but it’s super expensive and the selection isn’t as good, so we just go to the very practical store.

    1. I completely understand that. 8 wish I could find a store where I can find everything that is not outrageously expensive – so I always end up going to multiple ones. This particular one is really just for fruits and veggies and bread – most other things are on the pricey side so I go somewhere else for that.

  2. Love the photo of the apples, pears, and plums — so inviting and would be fun to draw. I don’t have a grocery shopping schedule, but I like to go every 5 days or so — and I alternate between two stores. My favorite is in a different part of the city but was on the commute to my daughters’ school and I miss going there each week.

    1. I love how the produce looks in the bins. They also have a whole aisle of potatoes and one with apples, another with mushrooms.
Luckily this one is still on my way to work otherwise it would be a little out of the way for me, too. I would miss it.

  3. I do love the dried flower wreaths. They are gorgeous. I don’t have a favorite market, I hate shopping, but it’s a chore that needs to be done. My daughter tells me to do the on-line order system and then just go pick it up. I just can’t do that because that store is more expensive than running to Winco. I have to save where I can.

I haven’t found a good time to shop. Just when I think I may have cracked the code, well, it seems like everyone else did too so I have to figure it out again.

  4. I like that middle wreath best.

Mostly I go to three stores…Safeway, Lunardi’s, and Whole Foods. Lunardi’s has the best meats and produce in our area, Safeway has better prices for things like milk and butter and so on. Whole Foods not as much, but I sometimes go there for cheese or berries when I’m in the mood. I mostly go weekdays on my lunch hour, shopping on the weekends is the worst (I work from home, so this works for me. Would not work for most people.)

    1. I envy you that you can go during the day. A lot of times I do end up going on the weekend just because in the evenings during the week it would get too late and I can’t leave fresh groceries in the car the whole day while I am at work.

  5. I love the Monterey Market, but it does get busy! I only go there midday, never on the weekends! I did that once and regretted it. I also love Berkeley Bowl, but it is also very busy on the weekends, so mid week midday is the only way to go there too. The one on Shattuck seems a little less busy than the one on 9th. If you ever get to Oakland, check out Farmer Joes, which there are two of (one off Fruitvale and one off of 35th). They are smaller, and also are a little busy on weekends, but their produce is usually well priced.

    1. For me Berkeley Bowl and anything Oakland was always on the other side of town /other side of my little world. I’ve been to Farmer Joes before when the kids had a German class over on that side but it has been a couple of years since. Isn’t it interesting how we always stick to our little neighborhoods?

  6. It looks so pretty. I love market displays but rarely shop at them. I find it to hectic and I can never decide which vendor and whoever has the best prices and such. I guess going regularly you have your stands.

But then I dont have any market anywhere near me where I happen to come across. So that ay be it.

  7. Sounds like a great market, esp. if it carries good bread πŸ™‚

We shop 90% at Trader Joe’s. We go to Safeway for a few things and to the local Co-op for a few things, and I also pick up groceries at Target (but don’t got there as often). I still shop every Friday, early mornings (I started that during the pandemic) and it’s a great time to go. Not many people there.
