Saturday shopping around

Walking through the garden shop

My Saturday started out as usual with some vacuuming the house and a round of yoga. Then I got one of the kids in the car to go get a COVID and flu shot with me. One more thing off the to do list. Fingers crossed it helps. I just had covid in August and it was not too bad but I don’t need another flu experience like last year for x-mas in Germany. It was only one of the kids but seeing how miserable he was, was no fun.

After lunch I took the kids to a friends house and stopped by the yarn store because they had a trunk show I was interested in. It was from a local bag company my daughter already has one from and I wanted to see if I find something else she might like. I did not end up buying anything but at least now I have a better idea about the sizes. Sometimes I have a hard time telling when I just see it online and have the measurements. I did walk back out without getting yarn either but sometimes just touching the it gives me a fluffy feeling inside. I have to finish my current project first before I can think of the next one. Across the street is also a garden shop that I popped in. Again I did not buy anything but I love walking the isles full of plants and dreaming up the perfect backyard.

In the afternoon we went to look at a specific e-bike I am interested in. I thought about this long and hard. I love riding my regular bike but commuting with it takes a lot of extra time out of my day. Sometimes I just need something a little faster. My hope would be that I can ditch the car most days and use the e-bike instead. It would mean no parking hassle and even though it may not be as much of a workout as an “real” bike, I would be moving (and it is almost as fast as the car). I already looked at a couple and did some research online. I wanted to look at the Velotric Discover 2 in person. So the rest of the afternoon was spend on driving to the closest electric bike shop having it in stock and trying out said bike. I loved it so much. I am still going back and forth which color to get but I think I am set on the bike. The salesperson in the shop was super nice, too. He had me try another one and did not try to sell me on the one I wanted even though it was pretty clear that I was in love with it. Final decision to be made next week.

On the way back home we made a quick stop at Trader Joe’s for dinner and at World Market. I managed to check off a couple more small presents for the Advent calendar I am making for the kids and a friend.

Have you tried an electric bike before? What do you think of them? Would anyone be interested in hearing more about my top picks?

  1. No, I’ve never tried an e-bike! They seem really fun though. I want to hear more about it.

You’re reminding me that I need a trip to Trader Joes- and I’m envious you have a World Market! We don’t have one of those near us. You’re making advent calendars? I hope we get to hear more about this!

  2. Rats, I commented and it disappeared.

e-bikes seem great, but I see them on the sidewalk a lot. I’m guessing that there are a lot of bike lanes where you can ride safely.

I love going to the nursery…I am going today, I need to get a tomato cage (if they sell them out of season). I’m going to put it over my little avocado tree, and then cover it with netting to try to keep the asshole squirrels from eating it.

    1. Squirrels sure enjoy our backyards as much as we do. There was a big uproar a couple of weeks ago because Annie’s Annuals suddenly shut down. It ‘s in Richmond and reopened as Curious Flora Nursery. If you get a chance go! Just wondering around is inspiring.

  4. I have never consider or ridden an e-bike. I guess if you are regularly commuting it makes sense. And in your kind of weather you can use it year round. My cousin uses one and she always does the easy way to work and shuts it of coming home. It works for her.

  5. My husband used to work at a bike shop and has lots of thoughts about ebikes. They’re perfect for your situation – commuters who want to get to work fast – but they are heavy and hard to stop and a lot of people who buy them don’t have the strength to control them, so they can be dangerous. I don’t know if they’re more dangerous than a regular bicycle, though. I guess you are going faster if you’re in an accident.

I’ve only been on one and it sort of made me nervous, but I’m a scaredy cat, so I should not be used as a measuring stick!

    1. After trying a bunch I can already say they all feel a little different. The one I liked most felt more like riding a bike with a bit of extra assistance. There are plenty of people who underestimate it I am sure.

  6. Me and mine just got our Covid and Flu shots at the same time, and while I felt feverish, my partner got a nasty rash on their arm. But it’s worth it to make sure we don’t get sick, especially over the up coming holidays. Oh, and I love the idea of an e-bike. Good luck with the search, they can be such a life saver in time and money.

  7. We got our flu shot on Friday (and the Covid Booster a few weeks ago). I do hope to ditch any sickness this fall.

Sounds like a lovely day of (window) shopping and exploring. I have a regular bike and use it to commute to work (once a week), but it’s a short commute (<3 miles) and so I have never considered an eBike. I can see how it would be helpful in your situation (you seem to have a longer commute) and I think riding and eBike is better than not riding a bike. πŸ™‚

  8. I have an e-bike. It is the assist type though where you always have to peddle (is that what you’re looking at?) The assist turns off when you reach 25km/hr though because anything with a motor that is not speed limited to that speed has to be registered here. Mine is a light e-bike which is really easy to ride without the assist. In fact I mostly ride it without the assist because we are in fairly flat area but since I do errands on it and use it for transport, I will use the assist to avoid getting too sweaty sometimes and sometimes being coastal we have terrible headwinds.
