Knitting Love

I am doing NaBloPoMo this month. 30 blog posts in 30 days. Come join me. You can find the full list of participants over on San’s blog here #nablopomo2023

I planned to take a picture of my current knitting (that scarf for my dad who washed his previous one in the washing machine), but of course the day went different as planned. Instead I helped one of my kids for an hour at the sewing machine for a present project of theirs (no, not planned for today).

So instead here is a picture of my Ravelry page

For everyone who does not know what Ravelry is: you can search knitting and crochet patterns. See what others made, see what yarns they used for their projects, save your own projects and so much more. It was a revelation when I found out about it.

I do know how to crochet as well but most of the time I knit these days. It is relaxing. It keeps my hands busy when I watch TV and awake and focused when I listen to a talk at work. I like how a the half finished project feels on my lap when I work on it, the warmth and the weight. It teaches me patience and I love when a project now turns out as I expected.

I learned in school (I think 7th grade) and I still remember how sticky and hot the stitches were in my hands and how hard to get it look right. In 11th grade I would drive my teachers crazy because I knitted in class when I had to listen to something (I really can concentrate better when I do).

Did you know that there is even a difference how Americans vs. Germans knit? I had no idea until I saw it. The stitches are made a slightly different way. The American way is called English knitting and the German one Continental. I also had to learn how to read English instructions. In German you call them right and left stitches and in English it’s knit and purl. I am glad you can find instructions online for almost anything these days.

Do you knit or crochet? What do you prefer?

German by birth, American by choice - home in both places. Always trying to make sense of it all. Mom, wife, friend, researcher, crafter, gardener, holder of schedules (in no particular order).

  1. So fun to see your knitting projects. Knitting is a craft I can’t master. Even though I totally agree with the meditative and relaxing benefits it has.
I have managed to knit a scarf and a hat but only because my mom started the first row. I cannot do that.
My mom (used to be) is a wizard on the needles. She knitted a whole dress in fourth grade under her desk.

I asked her to knit my wedding cardigan. I found a pattern online that we bought but she said it is all wrong and doesn’t make much sense. I had to translate so that is why I know what purl and knit means. But the difference may explain the struggle she had at the beginning.

    1. I am sorry, that your wedding cardigan did not work out. Some patterns do not make sense unfortunately. That is one reason why I like Every so much because others will leave comments and ratings on the patterns and you can see what yarn they used and what the finished piece looks like. It helps me a lot in my decision making. Even if you don’t knit it is good to have a knitter in your life.

  2. I wish I could knit. My mother does and I know I could still learn, but I don’t think I want to learn quite enough to actually do it. She takes handwork everywhere – in the car, while watching TV. She always has something to do and also appreciates having her hands busy/finds that helps her concentrate.

  3. As you know, I knit and crochet and I am so thankful I learned it as a child… because I know it takes practice in the beginning and a lot of people who try to learn it as adults don’t find it “relaxing” at all, because they’re still practicing… but I also find it super-relaxing in the evening when I watch TV. I read knitting is good for your mental health and I totally believe it. I haven’t been on Ravelry in a while – thanks for the reminder πŸ™‚
