Introduction round

Hello lovely readers,

I thought since I usually don’t post that much during the year other than NaBloPoMo I start with a small introduction with 10 random facts about me that may help you to get to know me a little better.

  1. I am originally from Germany.
I grew up in the northern German countryside, moved to the next bigger city for my education, worked a couple of years in that same city and moved to California in 2005 with my husband and like so many others around here we happen to stay.
  2. I am a mom.
I have two very awesome kids (14 and 12). It’s a really big part of my life and they might come up in a side note but I decided to keep that part of my life offline. It’s tricky sometimes but I think it’s their life and therefore it should be their choice.
  3. I am a scientist.
I wrote more about that at last year’s NaBloPoMo here.
  4. I am middle aged.
Oh the joys of getting older but honestly most of the time I do like it. I know myself better and care less what other people think about me (the emphasis is on less here – don’t judge, it’s a work in progress).
  5. I am not a morning person.
Don’t talk to me before I had my first cup of coffee.
  6. I like to do things with my hands.
I have lots of handy hobbies, like knitting, sewing, gardening, painting, crafting. Take your pick.
  7. I have a conflicting relationship with sports.
I know that exercise is good for me and I enjoy it when I started but it’s really hard for me to keep up a routine. With working, kids activities and home chores it seems a real effort to fit it in.
  8. I tend to read the end of a book before it’s done.
A lot of people will think this is really a no go but if the book is too exciting I can’t stop reading which really is not good for my sleep. If the book is boring the end resolve helps me make a decision if I keep at it or not.
  9. My favorite holiday season is Christmas.
I have so many sentimental memories of Christmas time and it’s just really big in Germany.
  10. Black clothes make me feel safe.
I always had an attraction to black. It’s like an armour. I do like lots of other colors and they brighten up my dark wardrobe but on a difficult day – black it is.

Do you have a question for me or think I should write more about one of the facts please fill out this form to help me decide.

Now it’s you r turn. What is one random fact about yourself?

  1. Nice to get to know you, great post! I agree with you about posting about kids. I post a bit here and there about my daughter, but like you said, her life is hers. 🙂

  2. Ooh! Elisabeth will be happy to hear you skip to the endings of books- she recently revealed that her dad does the same thing.
My son has no problem being on my blog, but my daughter doesn’t want me to post any pictures of her. Sometimes I’ll blur out her face if she’s in a photo I really want to include.
I like being middle aged! It is a nice feeling to stop caring as much what other people think. I’ll probably get happier and happier as I age- as long as my health holds up.
I also LOVE Christmas, and the whole season leading up to it!

    1. I sometimes wonder if the whole uncertainty that came with the pandemic made me more laid back in general since I was telling my kids so often, we will have to see what happens. Maybe that mantra got so ingrained that it made me a happier middle aged person?

  3. Oh Meike, I enjoyed reading this. I’ve been reading your blog for almost a year, but this was a great way for me to get to know you better. I love the Google Docs idea! That is fantastic. That’s something I’d like to try for my blog!

  4. I had another blog that had a lot about the kids but as they got older that became problematic and so I ended up making that blog private and starting a new one.
Random fact about me? I’m left handed for writing and other tasks that need fine motor skills but I play most sports right handed.

    1. My son is left handed, too. I never realized how tricky some things are. I recently tried to teach him to crochet what was difficult. When I tried with my left instead of my usual right I really felt for him.

    1. Wow, ski before 2? Did you love it back then and do you still? Living “near” Tahoe I decided in my 30s to try snowboarding (I question my decision now since I still remember my purple chins the day after). I admired the little kids who just picked it up in no time and zipped down the hills.

  5. This was a great introduction. Meike in a nutshell 🙂
I love black clothing too. It’s a great “basic” that every once in a while you can dress up with a tiny bit of color 🙂

  6. This was so fun to read! And yes, my dad also reads the last chapter in books regularly!

I am also not a morning person. I feel like the world is designed for morning people; alas, I am not one of them 😦

    1. I always knew I was not alone on the books.
Yes, the world is designed for morning people – work, school, family life, you name it. I am so glad our kids are older now and let me sleep in on the weekends sometimes.

  7. I agree with the black clothing. When I don’t feel too good I often choose black. I also choose black if I need to boot my self-esteem. Funnily enough though during winter I tend to switch that black with white. I guess I blend in then too.

I love that you keep your kids out and I understand it is tough. I see so many parents broadcasting everything online and I am always a bit taken aback. As a social media manager I see a lot and not only the rainbow-happy things but the ugly and dangerous things. I think a lot of people have no idea what it means putting things out. It will be interesting how the kid-generation of mom-influencers will handle that hitting puberty.

    1. I have a really hard time with white. It always was a food magnet for me and most days I left with my breakfast on myslef somewhere if I did not have time to change.
After writing that I keep my kids out I realized I mention them quite a bit but I guess that is normal. I am really trying.
I always hope that people who do have their kids online think it through and that it works for their families. I used to read a lot of mom blogs when the kids were little and I really enjoyed them. Life with a toddler can be a little isolating so it helped. In the end it’s a personal decision.

  8. I think it’s amazing how San’s influence has so many native Germans participating in NaBloPoMo. It’s so cool!

Reading the end of a book!!! The horror!! 🙂

  9. Hi Meike,

Daria from momofchildren. I can so relate to your relationship with sports and exercise. I have always taken it for granted in my younger years but now that I’m older I feel the pressure to do something- SOMETHING- to move my body and get the feel-good hormones. I do struggle with moods (peri-menapause?). I love Christmas, too – although in Russia it’s on January 7th. One day, one day, I will travel with my kids to Germany and Austria to see some Weihnachtsmarkts. Also, although I am Russian, we have relatives living in Bavaria. They moved back in the 90s.

    1. You should definitely go see the Christmas Markets if you get the chance. We are going this year and although my daughter was tiny last time we went to one that was the first thing she was asking about when we decided on Christmas with family.
