So long, until next time

Zabriskie Point in Death Valley

Our road trip is coming to an end and we head back home. We decided to take a break on the long drive back to the Bay Area and stay in Bakersfield for the night before heading back on the 5. Death Valley is “just” a little over 2 hours from Las Vegas and you could say it is almost on the way. We did not do any hikes this time and only stopped at Zabriskie Point for the views and at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes but it was nice to see something other than sparkling lights and lots of people. The BIL and SIL are heading back to Germany and life will return to normal with school and work and all the other things (including loads of laundry to be finished).

This day also marks the end of NaBloPoMo. I do have some catching up to do on all the posts I missed in the last few days. Blogging was already a lot while travelling and family just came first this time. I did not quite think it through when I signed up. It was still a lot of fun though and I am happy to have found some new blogs on my radar. Thank you as always to San for organizing!

Las Vegas Day 2

It’s sugar – lots of it

Because the sun was out we decided to take a walk around the strip. We stopped by at a sweets Shop to the delight of the kids and saw the fountains in front of the Bellagio.

The fountains in front of the Bellagio

There was still a lot of scaffolding up from the car race the weekend before so we had to cross the street or bypass through Casinos to get where we wanted to go.

Turkey dinner

In the early afternoon we headed to our friends’ House for Thanksgiving dinner which was excellent as always.

We finished the evening with a Feuerzangenbowle. It’s basically mulled wine with a bit of extra alcohol and sugar. You have to have this special tong which holds a sugar cone. You soak it with rum (at least 54%) and light it on fire so that the caramelized sugar drips in the warm punch. I found this recipe in English if you want to have a closer look. It also has all the links to the ingredients you need. It’s tasty but I haven’t had any this time since I was the designated driver. Funnily enough the sugar cone was eyed with great interest during the security checks at the airport. It was always passed the drug and explosive tests since it is really just sugar. You can also get it here but is much cheaper in Germany. Would you give this a try?

Las Vegas Day 1

Games anyone?

So, what do we do in Las Vegas? Most of the time we come here to visit our friends, but this time we also came because BIL and SIL like going to Las Vegas. There was a visit to the Outlet Mall on request so I and the kids dropped off the rest of the party and made our way to yet another game store in another part of town with a pit stop at the Boba shop. Game stores seem to become a new theme whenever I want to make the kids happy. We also had time visit the Writer’s Block. It’s an awesome bookstore my friend introduced me to and now we come here almost every time. By the time we got back to the hotel it was almost time for heading out to our dinner reservation where we met up with our friends.

Waiting for our dinner time to start

The restaurant Buddy V’s is in the Venetian and with a little extra time we walked through the canal streets. The first time I saw the artificial blue sky I did a double take.

The Sphere experience

The main attraction of the day was a visit to the Sphere. It’s that big dome with projections all over. You probably came across one of the gigantic Smiley faces before? Inside is an event space/movie theatre. We had tickets for Postcards from Earth. It is shown on the world’s largest high Definition Screen and provides an interactive experience. That includes temperature changes, wind, chair vibration and smell. It was really something. I did not care much for the story (humans send in pairs to other planets to populate them because humanity destroyed Planet Earth) but the images were stunning. The entrance area reminded me of a space port in science fiction movies. Everyone left impressed.

Into the desert

Abandoned house on hill in Calico Ghost Town

It surprises me every single time how long the drive to Las Vegas is. We started in Tehachapi in the morning and arrived in Las Vegas in the dark. To be fair we did do a road stop at the Calico Ghost Town. It does not really feel like a ghost town since a lot of the abandoned buildings in this old silver mining town are occupied by touristy shops now. It’s quite the production.there are parts that still have the abandoned charm of lost places but most of it feels more like a tourist trap. It was a place to stop but one time was enough in my opinion. We walked around, took some pictures and headed back out. The lunch we had at Peggy Sue’s Diner beforehand was way more worth it. It has fun decorations in each dining room and the food was quite good for the price.

When we arrived in Vegas we still had time to try out the hotel pool and the kids got a pizza dinner while the adults took a walk along the strip. This city is a bit crazy, loud and sparkly. I do like looking at all the lights for a bit but don’t care much for the casinos. We missed the Bellagio fountain but had a look at the new Christmas decorations in the botanical gardens. I kept wondering how many poinsettias there might be.

Rainy day at the coast

Bubblegum Alley in the rain

I quite like Pismo Beach and the surrounding area. We have been here before multiple times and the plan was to go on an ATV ride in the dunes in the morning. Unfortunately the weather forecast was correct and it was pouring the whole day long. We had some time to kill because I had booked an escape room for 4pm that we could not move. We started by going to Barnes and Noble in San Luis Obispo. A bookshop is always a good idea in my opinion. We were hoping the rain would let up a little so we could have a look at the bubblegum Alley – not so much. A wall of bubblegum is quite yucky in the rain (it is yucky all the time but even more in the rain).

We made our way to Pismo Beach and spent the rest of the time with games and lunch at an arcade place. The escape room was a full success. It was the Alice Room at the Locked Inn. It was one of the best and hardest rooms I have done so far and it was really fun.

Driving on to Tehachapi to spend the night there and be closer to Las Vegas.

Stop at Sculpterra

Entering Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden

On day 1 we drove down to Pismo Beach from the Bay Area. The main tourist attraction Highway 1 along Big Sur was out of the question because you can’t get through right now due to a landslide. The last couple of years this has been a pretty regular occurrence but it sure is beautiful when it is open.

Sleeping cat

So on this fine day we took 101 instead and stopped at the Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden in Paso Robles. It was a nice break from the road and the adults had a glass of wine while wandering through the gardens.

Giant tiger

There are quite a few sculptures in the garden and it’s really beautiful out there

The best thing? Probably the late afternoon sun on the fall leaves. It’s magic right there.

Family visits and running around

Inspection of the flat tire

The last couple of days have been a whirlwind and after not going to bed before midnight for a couple of days I gave in and was not typing blog posts for NaBloPoMo. I am writing this on my phone in the back of our trusted minivan. My BIL and SIL arrived and now we are on our way down the coast. They already got the full on Northern California winter experience with non stop rain for a whole day. Yesterday was sunny though and we took a ferry Ride to San Francisco. The day started out with a surprise flat tire. Luckily we were right around the corner from a tire shop and they fixed it in 20 minutes so we actually made said ferry in time. Good that I am always on the early side.

Ferry terminal.from the water in Richmond

In my opinion taking the ferry is the absolute best way to travel to the city. I was surprised how many Holiday decorations were already up.

Now I have to spend some time researching our first stop along the way. Can you tell yet I am not quite up to speed? Usually I have that planned out ahead of time. Stay tuned for more road trip reports to come.

Wolfs in sheep skin

Today I had the pleasure helping my son with his German homework. Since my husband and I are both German we want our kids to know German as well. The Bay Area has actually a pretty large German community and we do have a local German school with after school German classes. I would say we are lucky – my son probably not so much. We do speak German at home but it is not an easy language and I realize more and more that there are certain aspects that get lost. Today homework was to correct German proverbs:
One of my most memorable of the list was “Der Appetit kommt beim Lernen” corrected to “Der Appetit kommt beim Essen”. It means that the appetite will come with the meal. It was used a lot when I was a kid and we did not like lunch or dinner – we had to eat in anyway. I guess I am not telling him that often enough (what does not mean that he likes everything – quite the contrary actually), because he had no idea what I was talking about. I actually like the idea of using it as “The appetite comes with learning” (what was the “wrong sentence”). It makes as much sense to me in this context. I keep telling myself that one day he will thank me.

Another good one:
Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund.
– The early morning hour has gold in its mouth.

It basically means that if you get started early you will come across the best opportunities. Similar to the early bird catches the worm. I do like proverbs and a lot are stuck in my head even if I don’t use them as much anymore. I feel like these are harder to learn in a different language since they are usually not meant literally. They are so cool though. Do you have a favorite one?

Backdating

I have caught myself backdating posts the last couple of days since I had/have a hard time keeping up with posting let alone commenting on other blogs. So please don’t think I am ignoring your posts – I have been skimming but was a little short on time commenting. I am trying to catch up – promise!
One annoying thing was that our internet at home was out over the weekend. I don’t know if I should call it luck that it was an more centralist issue that not only affected us? At least we did not have to wait for AT&T to show up at our house but “just” needed to wait for them to fix the bigger issue at hand. We don’t have AT&T service but our provider still uses their lines in our neighborhood. It really makes you realize for how many things you rely on the internet working these days. Not to mention that typing on the phone is not the best.
Part of me was asking myself “What were you thinking when you signed up for NaBloPoMo?” We have BIL and SIL visiting this week and besides the birthday celebrations last weekend I spend a decent amount of cleaning. With all the back problems the house cleaning fell a little short. But hey, I was still able to walk the next day so I guess overall it is getting better. The added fitness classes, chiropractor and PT visits don’t help with my time management but I feel like it’s starting to pay off what is all that counts right now.

So anyway, I guess this is a sort of apology post and I hope you stick around even if I don’t manage to catch up on all the posts you have written!
How is NaBloPoMo going for you this year?
